ILP Community Libraries Initiative:

ILP has established libraries for the low income group communities in Bangalore. The need was felt because children from low income groups go to government schools and schools offer low quality of learning levels. These children do not have opportunities to practice reading and develop language proficiency and schools do not offer this opportunity in the present system.  ASER 2009 finds that nearly 47% of children in Class V are unable to read Class II text. If children lack basic reading skills then the learning in other subjects too is poor. It is clear that not mere access to schooling but quality of education is of greater importance.

We believe that the first step in improving learning levels of children is giving them an opportunity to read.  To this effect 3 community libraries were set up as a pilot project during 2006-07 in lower income neighborhoods in Yeshwantpur, Bangalore North. From October 2010 onwards we started fourth and fifth Community libraries in Sanjeevani Nagara and Bynahalli.

The 2 new libraries are located in the rent-free buildings given by the community and have started functioning form October 2010. The Bynahalli Library benefits 227 including two neighboring villages.  In Sanjeevini Nagar totally 239 children will benefit.  All children are from 1st standard to 10th standard. We intend to expand this project and reach out to more children due to the encouraging response received so far.

Objectives of the community libraries

The objectives in setting up these libraries are:
• To provide access to good books to people in the community.
• To provide a space for children to do their homework every evening.
• To assist needy children set their learning goals by themselves and reach them.
• Create a child-friendly learning environment.

Collaboration for Knowledge Sharing:

ILP has partnered with the Hippocampus Reading Foundation (HRF) (www.hrfindia.org), Bangalore, to structure the library content and learning level assessments of children.
CLT India (www.cltindia.org) under its - e-Patashale program provides soft copies of learning support materials based on Karnataka state syllabus.

Dhwani Trust (www.dhwanitrust.org) is an Educational Resource Centre and provides supplementary learning known as subject Enrichment materials to Kannada language and Social Studies.

Apart form the reading books Volunteers to conduct sessions on Life Coping Skills, Science Experiments, Mathematics Classes and exposure programs.

Start a new chapter

ILP is looking to expand its presence around the world. The creation of an ILP chapter significantly accelerates the process of spreading awareness in that area. Starting a new chapter requires bringing together a core group of people who are willing to devote a few hours per week for this cause. This core group can spread awareness using e-mail, personal contacts, cultural organizations, company contacts or Indian stores. A full-fledged chapter could have activities to whatever level their time and resources allow.
