India Literacy Project (ILP), a development support Non-Profit Organization (NPO), positioning itself as a catalyst for 100% literacy in India, has been supporting grass roots projects that aim at ensuring elementary education for all children in backward socio-economic regions in India. Since inception in 1990, ILP has supported over 87 literacy and education programs in 18 states in India benefiting over 150,000 women and children.
Vision: To be a catalyst for 100% literacy in India
Mission: Empowering every individual we serve with functional literacy and an understanding of their basic rights and responsibilities.
ILP works with local nongovernmental organizations (NGO) to implement projects across the different states of India. The projects are chosen based on the literacy levels of the area, the prevailing socio economic conditions with the focus on making education a sustained and community owned initiative.
Our programs include
-
Early Childhood Education for Children (0 to 6 years old)
-
Education for children (6 to 14 years old)
-
Life skills training for Youth (14 to 25 years old)
-
Adult Literacy and skills training (> 25 years old)
ILP's main role is to enable and support the implementing partner (NGO) in its processes of strengthening the community, to identify and address the gaps in the delivery of education services, and to bring about systemic changes through advocacy.
In the US, ILP has chapters and interest groups in metropolitan areas including the California Bay Area. ILP is a completely volunteer-based organization, with over 250 volunteers in the US, concentrating its efforts on building awareness for the importance of education and raising funds for literacy and empowerment programs. ILP has extended its reach to the most rural and remote parts of India and its support has benefited over 150,000 women and children since inception in 1990. All donations to ILP are tax deductible under Section 501(c)3 of the IRS code (Tax Id 36-3779020)
