Appeal For Contributions Towards Tsunami Relief And Rehabilitation

Update: ILP initiates long-term rehab efforts in Vembar region of Tuticorin district

India Literacy Project has initiated long-term rehab efforts in the Vembar region of Tuticorin district in TamilNadu that was ravaged by the devastating South-Asian Tsunami. As a first step, ILP volunteers visited the region on May 30th and 31st, 2005, to get a first hand experience of the problems faced in the area and to conduct a NGO consultation and brainstorming session to identify the felt needs in the area.

ILP is considering a cluster approach (multiple NGO's focusing on specific groups of villages in general area) to extend its rehabilitation efforts. This approach is another step in the evolution of ILP to become a more effective organization in addressing the needs of a specific geography. Following the field visit to several villages in the area and interaction with the people, ILP volunteers held a consultation session with 6 grass-roots level NGO's in the area to hear their viewpoints on how best to tackle the issues facing the region.

The interested NGO's have been asked to submit formal project proposals to ILP, following ILP's guidelines and keeping in line with the findings of the consultation session. Project Proposals from the NGOs (expected to be received by mid-July) will be reviewed by ILP following standard practices that ILP has evolved over the years for Pre-Finance Assessment. More details on the project activities will be finalized in the coming months following these reviews.

A complete field visit report can be accessed here. For more information on ILP's Tsunami rehab efforts, please watch this space for regular updates or write to . ILP is continuing to accept designated donations for the Tsunami Rehab Initiative. Your contributions will help us make this initiative a grand success. Click here to donate.

Update:

Emergency relief operations in the Tsunami affected areas of Southern India have made good progress and Governmental and Non-Governmental agencies have for the large part reached the affected people. ILP volunteers and our partners on the ground are assessing the needs of the affected communities for the medium-to-long term.

At ILP, we believe that the long-term rehabilitiation needs will require a more committed and sustained effort and will focus on helping these efforts by raising funds and awareness. ILP will aim to focus on the education aspects of rehabilitation by selecting appropriate NGOs on the ground that will focus on education revival efforts for children, adult livelihood/literacy programs, and efforts that include community education for disaster preparedness.

All Donations received upto January 7, 2005 will be directed towards immediate relief operations through Association for India's Development (AID ). Donations received on or after January 8, 2005 will be earmarked for funding long-term efforts such as those outlined above. These will be chosen using the same rigorous criteria that ILP uses to fund and monitor existing literacy projects.
