Region Demographics

•  People live in temporary settlements in the mining areas, these areas are hubs for child labor amongst other social maladies
•  Having no access to schools in a 3-4 km radius, many children of mine workers collect iron ore pebbles on the roads

Project Description

This project aims to provide basic education to children of mine workers through education centers. To facilitate gram sabhas and formation of education committees in these settlements.

Project Roadmap

•  10 literacy centres in temporary settlements called 'hatings' covering children out of school are operational
•  Ensure a growth in enrolment of children at primary level by 25%
•  Bring about a critical consciousness among the guardians, community and teachers about education

2007 Funding: $5,653

Accomplishments

•  10 centers cover 442 children addressing the school access problem Mainstream rate is 60%
•  Formed functional Gram sabha and 'hatting' education committees
•  Engaged the community and the mining companies to provide material and financial contributions
