Led by IIT Madras, in collaboration with the Department of Education and ILP, the Hands-on Electronics and Science initiative is revolutionizing experiential learning in government schools across Tamil Nadu. Spanning all 38 districts, the program covers 253 schools and benefits 337,137 students from Classes VI to XII.
Each school has been equipped with 10 Universal Electronic Kits designed by IIT Madras and 6 Science Kits developed by ILP, enabling students to move beyond textbooks and engage in practical, hands-on learning in Science and Electronics.
Over a 4–5 year period, the initiative aims to train 1.92 lakh students in Science (Classes VI–X) and 2.51 lakh students in Electronics (Classes IX–XII). The 2024–25 academic year marked the first phase of school-level implementation. During this phase, over 21,000 Class IX students were introduced to experiential learning in Electronics.
An assessment tool developed by IIT Madras was administered statewide by the School Education Department, with ILP facilitators supporting its rollout, evaluation, and result consolidation. Impressively, 79% of participating students achieved passing marks.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, and Dr. Sarathi, Dean (Planning), commended the efforts of the Government of Tamil Nadu and ILP and encouraged the continuation of this impactful collaboration. ILP facilitators played a key role in conducting assessments, evaluating responses, and managing the online entry of student scores across all participating schools.
