Lata (name changed) hails from Chennai from an economically backward community. She is currently pursuing Operation Theatre and Anesthesia Technology in Chennai.

Her journey has been marked by both academic dedication and personal challenges.

During her third year of college, she faced a devastating blow when her father lost his life in an accident.

The responsibility to look after her education and family had now fallen on her.

Her mother who is a landless agricultural laborer, earns a modest daily wage of Rs. 250. However, due to limited work opportunities, she can secure employment for only about 15 days each month. Lata also has a younger brother who is embarking on his educational path and even his fees had to be taken care of.

In the past, Lata’s father had been the pillar of financial support, ensuring her educational expenses were covered. Unfortunately, his untimely demise plunged the family into a precarious financial situation. With her mother’s earnings being the sole source of income, the burden of meeting not only basic needs but also the annual tuition fees became overwhelming.

Amidst these trying circumstances, a glimmer of hope emerged when a member of the School Management Committee (SMC) recommended Lata as a candidate for a scholarship from the Indian Rural Community Development Society (IRCDS). Recognizing her financial struggles, IRCDS, in partnership with #India Literacy Project extended scholarship to Lata.

Despite the adversity she faced, Lata’s determination shone through, reflected in her impressive academic achievement of attaining a 70% overall score.

Lata is grateful for the timely support received from IRCDS and ILP.
