In the words of Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

This quote beautifully encapsulates the power of collaboration.

An exemplary illustration of this collaborative spirit can be witnessed through the partnership between Gurukrupa Foundation, India Literacy Project, Tamil Nadu Education Department and most importantly, the community around.

All of them working diligently to bring about a transformation in Madurantakam Block, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.

This impacted 4468+ children from 5th to 12th grade via Multi-Dimensional Learning Spaces (MDLS), where children can learn using digital and experiential methods.

At the heart of this transformation program lies the need to empower teachers. Recognizing their pivotal role, a comprehensive framework and methodology is in place to increase classroom engagement. By providing teachers with the necessary tools, support, and training, the objective is to enhance the learning experience for students.

To ensure the effectiveness of this program, a robust metrics tracking element is incorporated into all the initiatives. Starting with pre-assessments and concluding with post-assessments, ILP diligently evaluates the impact of the programs.

A vital aspect of the MDLS program is the provision of Science Kits to schools. These kits go beyond simplifying subject understanding; they cultivate scientific temper among students.

The science kits provide a space for children to observe, understand, experiment, and discuss various aspects of science and the things around them.

Students can touch, feel and build without fear of breaking expensive items.

The Science Kit covers:

  • 200+ chemistry, physics, and biology concepts
  • Everyday items along with a few specialized components
  • A detailed manual containing items required and setup and concepts
  • Experiment videos, manuals, and a structured training program

The science kit is aligned with National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) curriculum from grades 5 -10.

Recognizing the importance of literacy and reading skills, the transformation program incorporates child-friendly libraries.

Trained librarians conduct reading level assessments for students and classify books according to the GROWBY reading methodology.

By categorizing books with different colors, students are encouraged to choose books at their appropriate reading level, thereby fostering a love for reading and nurturing their literacy skills.

The third focus area of this program is Career Guidance, a first of its kind that is being provided by any NGO in Madurantakam Block.

During these sessions:

  • Students discover themselves
  • Understand aspects that impact career choices
  • Available career options and what it takes to choose them
  • Students are provided guidance to choose the best option that works for them

The engine behind this transformation program is the community involvement at every stage.

Be it supporting the teachers and school management in conducting these programs. Or providing infrastructure support to set up SMART classrooms in schools and conducting science fairs.

The community also supported by raising funds and providing UPS, stationery, toilet renovation etc.

The participation of the community at every stage is an indicator of their involvement and understanding of the school’s functioning and the importance of education for a better future for their children.

The program has received appreciation from all quarters, highlighting its impact and the potential for replicating such initiatives on a larger scale.
