A cabin crew member. An Income Tax Officer. Two very different careers, both on Gayathri’s mind while she’s still in Class 8.

A student at a government school in Bidar, Karnataka, Gayathri has career aspirations of her own. But what does it take to get there? What should she study? Which exams will she need to take?

Through ILP’s Career Guidance programme, she began finding answers to these questions.

The programme introduces students to career options they may not have considered before. They learn about PUC streams in Science, Commerce and Arts, Polytechnic diplomas, ITI, paramedical courses and short-term skill-based training. They also learn about the qualifications, skills and examinations required for different careers, and the options available after Class 10.

The programme goes beyond career choices. Students learn about scholarships, free hostel facilities, government schemes and competitive exam preparation that can help them continue their education. Activities such as the Holland test help them explore their interests and abilities while Career Guidance Counsellors explain different career fields and answer their questions.

For Gayathri, these sessions helped bring her aspirations into sharper focus. She gained a better understanding of the qualifications, examinations and nature of the work involved in becoming a cabin crew member or an Income Tax Officer.

Gayathri is in Class 8 so she doesn’t need to have all the answers yet. But now, she has a clearer idea of the questions to ask and the steps to explore next.
